Dangerous Goods
Gophr can carry limited quantities of goods regulated under ADR (the European agreement on the carriage of dangerous goods by road), including solvents, aerosols, flammable liquids and batteries. This is an opt-in feature. Contact your account manager to have it enabled.
Declaring dangerous goods
Add dangerous_goods to a parcel when you create or update it:
- Create a Job: Set
pickups[].parcels[].dangerous_goods. - Create a Parcel: Set
dangerous_goods. - Update a Parcel: Set
dangerous_goods.
Omit the field or send null when the parcel contains no dangerous goods. This is the default.

For a numbered entry, find its UN number in ADR 2025 Volume 1, Chapter 3.2, Table A and check the referenced special provisions. These links are starting points, not a substitute for checking the conditions that apply to your package; ADR 2025 Volume 2 covers packing and labelling. For sealed dry nickel-cadmium batteries, identify the applicable classification before assuming an exemption.
Rules
- One value per parcel. A parcel is either one class of dangerous goods or none. If a consignment contains more than one class, book each class as a separate parcel.
- Enabled customers only. Requests containing
dangerous_goodsfrom a customer without the feature are rejected with422and codeDANGEROUS_GOODS_NOT_ENABLED. The field is never silently ignored, so a2xxresponse means the goods were booked as declared. - Set at booking.
dangerous_goodscan be set or changed on a parcel until the job is confirmed. After that it is read-only, because the label and courier assignment depend on it. - Clearing. Send
nullon a parcel update to remove the declaration before confirmation. - Packaging. You remain responsible for packaging the goods to the standard outlined in the ADR Government Guidance. Lithium batteries must be undamaged and under 100Wh each. ADR limited-quantity goods must be in their final retail packaging and carry the limited-quantity diamond on the transport packaging.
Quantity limits
ADR caps how much dangerous goods a single vehicle may carry. Gophr enforces these limits at booking time using the parcel weight, dimensions and quantity you supply, so declare them accurately.
| Limit | Applies to | Calculation |
|---|---|---|
| 30 kg and 30 litres per type of good | each dangerous_goods value on a job | sum of weight × quantity and length × width × height × quantity across parcels with that value |
| 333 kg and 333 litres per job | all dangerous goods on a job | sum across every parcel with a dangerous_goods value |
| 1000 kg per job | BATTERY_LEAD_ACID | sum of weight × quantity |
BATTERY_NIMH and BATTERY_NICD_DRY_SEALED are exempt from ADR and do not count towards these totals.
Parcel weight and dimensions are gross figures, so they can only over-count the dangerous goods content, never under-count it. If a limit is exceeded the request is rejected with 422 and code DANGEROUS_GOODS_LIMIT_EXCEEDED. Split the goods across separate jobs to stay within the limits.
Gophr also ensures that two jobs carrying dangerous goods are never combined in one vehicle beyond the 333 kg limit. That check happens at dispatch and needs nothing from you.
What Gophr does with the declaration
- Label. For lithium and lead acid batteries the Gophr label carries the required battery hazard symbol. Print and affix the label from the delivery label endpoint if you do not have your own compliant hazard labels.
- Courier assignment. Jobs with
ADR_LIMITED_QUANTITY, lithium or lead acid parcels are offered only to couriers who have completed Gophr's ADR handling training. Allow for this when booking at short notice. - Visibility. The declaration is shown to the courier and to Gophr operations throughout the delivery.
Errors
All errors use the standard validation response. The object identifies the parcel by its position in the request.
| Code | Status | Cause |
|---|---|---|

DANGEROUS_GOODS_NOT_ENABLED | 422 | Customer is not enabled for dangerous goods |
